A Nation Holding Its Breath: Reflecting on the Recent School Abduction

The recent abduction of students and staff from St. Mary’s School in Niger State has once again shaken the heart of our nation. Though details remain uncertain, the fear, confusion, and pain felt by families and communities are all too real. A school is meant to be a sanctuary of learning, growth, and hope which was instead turned into a scene of terror on a night that should have been ordinary.

It is heartbreaking to imagine the parents who waited for their children to return home, only to be met with silence. The teachers, whose calling is to guide and protect, were themselves caught in a storm beyond their control. And the innocent students are now forced into a reality no child should ever experience.

Incidents like this do more than strike at individual families; they wound our collective spirit. They challenge the very foundations of safety, education, and community that we strive to uphold. Yet in moments like this, we must choose compassion over despair. We must lift up the affected families with our prayers, our voices, and our unwavering demand for justice and protection.

As we pray for safety, we should stand together always refusing to become numb to these tragedies, refusing to accept fear as normal, and refusing to abandon hope. Every child deserves to learn without fear. Every teacher deserves to work in safety. And every community deserves peace.

Today, our hearts are with St. Mary’s School. May strength find those who are grieving, may comfort reach those who are waiting, and may protection surround those still missing.
